NEWS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ASPSU Meets with U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Oregon Governor, and Senator
Date: August 29, 2009
On Wednesday, August 19, 2009, Senator Ron Wyden hosted a vererans round table meeting
with U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki and Governor Ted Kulongoski at Portland
State University. ASPSU Student Body President Jonathan Sanford and other student veterans
joined the Senator, Secretary, and Governor, who were welcomed and introduced by PSU
President Wim Wiewel. The meeting particularly addressed concerns affecting student veterans.
Prior to their stop at PSU, Shinseki, Kulongoski, and Wyden spent their time in the Portland area
discussing other veterans issues. At the 66th annual convention of the Blinded Veterans
Association, Shinseki addressed problems facing the veteran community including homelessness
and over 15 million veterans not seeking access to health care and other benefits.
The round table at PSU centered primarily around the new G.I. Bill, which will cover the costs of
education at public universities, colleges, and private schools. ASPSU President Jonathan Sanford,
who is a veteran himself, echoed the sentiments shared by other veteran attendees who were
critical of the services offered at school to returning veterans. Sanford pointed out that ASPSU
and other students at the university are working to improve the college experience for veterans
by supporting the Student Veterans Association and helping to implement features of the new
G.I. Bill. The Student Veterans Association is a student-led organization at PSU committed to
advocating for the veteran voice on campus and connecting veterans with the services they
need.
Despite the challenges faced by student veterans, Shinseki guaranteed that they remain a top
priority. He reassured, “The tone and culture in the VA is changing.”

NEWS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tasha Triplett Joins ASPSU Leadership
Date: August 17, 2009
The Associated Students of Portland State University (ASPSU) is proud to announce the selection of Tasha Triplett as the new ASPSU Outreach and Fundraising Coordinator. As Outreach and Fundraising Coordinator, Triplett joins ASPSU President Jonathan Sanford and his cabinet, the ASPSU Executive Staff. The complete Executive Staff consists of ten members whose individual skills range from legislative affairs to equal rights advocacy.
“Tasha brings a wealth of experience and will be a valuable addition to ASPSU and PSU overall,” said ASPSU President Jonathan Sanford. “She has a long history of activism and we are honored to have the opportunity to work with her.”
Triplett attended high school in Tucson, Arizona where she became a tireless activist. Catalyzed by her friends’ experience with discrimination, Triplett co-founded a Gay Straight Alliance Chapter. According to Triplett, “The experience instilled in me the importance of standing up for civil rights as well as rooting in me a deep passion to advocate and organize for the equality of all.” Triplett’s passionate efforts at her high school were just the beginning as she soon became an active proponent for anti-war, anti-death penalty, pro-choice, and immigrant rights issues.
A transfer student from New College of California, a small, liberal arts college in San Francisco, California, Triplett moved to PSU last spring and immediately found herself involved with the campus community. On why she chose PSU, Triplett said, “To build roots in a liberal, active community that prides itself on grassroots organizing.” Since spring, she has been involved with the Students United for Palestinian Equal Rights (SUPER), the International Student Organization (ISO), and the Women’s Resource Center.
This year, Triplett is planning several events that will build community on campus and promote ASPSU’s role in championing students’ needs. She hopes to use her position as a platform to “build a stronger, more accessible campus community where students are valued and invested.”

NEWS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ASPSU Student Government Unveils New Logo
Date: August 2009
In an effort to create a brand more in line with the mission and values of student government, the Associated Students of Portland State University (ASPSU) is proud to unveil its new logo this summer. The new logo embodies a new generation of developing professionals who, under Student Body President Jonathan Sanford's leadership, tirelessly work to engage and serve as advocates for the students at PSU. ASPSU teamed up with Christy Lee Zilka, a Graphic Design student and manager of the PSU Graphic Design Center, to design the logo. Such collaboration is an example of how ASPSU is working this year to utilize and give a voice to the underutilized student potential at the university.
The logo itself is representative of both student government as an institution and the student experience at PSU. The logo features PSU’s colors, ASPSU’s name, a shield that contains four symbols, and four stars representing the four different branches of government in ASPSU. The two leaves below the shield represent PSU’s commitment to pioneering sustainability as it grows into one of the nation’s leading urban universities.
The ASPSU administration anticipates that the new logo will help ASPSU stand out in the minds of students. As part of the re-branding process, ASPSU is currently developing its new publication template design as well as web design, which are set to be finalized during Fall term of this year. According to ASPSU President Jonathan Sanford, “The logo reinforces the new style, ideas, and outlook that ASPSU is holding this year that differentiates it from past years. ASPSU has done great things for PSU students but the best is yet to come.”

Would you like to log some volunteer hours, build up your portfolio, earn leadership course credits, lock down a letter of recommendation, and help activism for higher education all at the same time? Do you have mad graphics and web design skillz? If so, we have the opportunity for you!
ASPSU is currently looking to take on a web development intern! As you can see, our Drupal-based website could use a thorough design overhaul. Most of the more technical matters have been worked out, and all of the content will be provided, so we can basically offer you a blank canvas and let you go CSS crazy!
Drop by our office in SMSU 117 and talk to Eddie at the front desk for more information, or just send an email to hallmane@pdx.edu. If you're a good fit for the job, we can fill out an intern application right then!

The new and improved ASPSU website is currently in beta testing and is scheduled to go live during the beginning of summer term. New features include information that is both complete and current (gasp!), a much-improved news and blogging system, a forum for getting suggestions and feedback from the student body, and (hanging out behind closed doors) the ASPSU Institutional Memory Wiki.
Please browse around and get comfortable with our new layout and features. Any technical questions or design suggestions can be directed to Eddie at hallmane@pdx.edu.
